3 Ways to Lower Your Auto Insurance Premium

It's easy to forget that your car insurance is specific to you, especially when you're used to paying a set premium month after month. But as much as it may seem like a static bill in your life, the truth is that you have control over how much comes out of your paycheck. Here arediscount sign three ways you can take action and potentially save money on your car insurance.

Learn About Discounts

Auto insurance companies don't always advertise how their customers can save money, but the list of discounts can be extensive. Buying anti-theft devices, getting good grades, taking defensive driving classes — these are just a few ways that you can save a few bucks on your premium. Even good credit can be a means to more affordable policy. Your carrier is looking for responsible behavior in all aspects of your life, not just when you're on the road.

Work On Your Driving

Tickets, accidents, moving violations: these are all infractions that will keep your insurance rates high. Admittedly, this step will take a little longer than just calling a company to ask about discounts, but it's one of the more effective steps you can take. So as nice as it can be to speed along the lonely highway, just remember that it's not necessarily worth the cost of the ticket or the increase in your rates.

Alter Your Plan

Shopping around for better rates is always a good way to get a better deal. You can also consider lowering the amount of coverage on your car. For example, you may want to switch to liability if your car is already paid off. (This tactic is usually recommended for people with relatively inexpensive cars to replace, as liability typically won't cover damage if you were at fault.) You can also raise your deductible or ask about bundling discounts (e.g., adding another car onto the same policy, etc.).

Auto insurance rates are flexible to a certain degree, but drivers should be careful when it comes to selecting a carrier. Some may advertise low rates only to tack on fees to the final price. Others may be difficult to work with if you need to settle a claim. Part of achieving the best rates on your auto insurance is doing your research on more than just the price.
